European Committee of the Weizmann Institute of Science (ECWIS)
A European network for science
People across Europe, not only in Germany, support the Weizmann Institute. The European Committee of the Weizmann Institute of Science (ECWIS) brings this commitment together, connecting national societies — including the German Friends of the Weizmann Institute — in a strong European network.
Founded in Zurich in 1960, ECWIS promotes the visibility of the Institute, its research and its distinctive educational programmes. At the same time, the Committee strengthens scientific collaboration and partnerships throughout Europe.
Today, the network comprises 13 national societies as well as the Weizmann Young European Network (WYEN). It brings together a wide range of perspectives, cultures and experiences, united by the shared belief that science improves our lives.
The value of this European collaboration is also reflected in the network’s long-term development. “For more than 65 years, ECWIS has been the bridge between Europe and the Weizmann Institute — driven by people who share the same passion and work together to make research for the benefit of humanity possible,” says Bob Drake, Chair of the International Board and Chair of the European Committee, Weizmann Institute of Science. This has created a dynamic network that provides a strong foundation for sustained support and international collaboration.
Making European ties visible
The strength of this community is especially evident in shared initiatives such as the Meet Weizmann Online series.
In 2026, the Weizmann Lecture, held as part of the German Friends’ Annual General Meeting, was livestreamed across Europe for the first time. The event demonstrated just how closely connected European supporters are — and how actively their shared commitment to science is put into practice across borders.
„Support for the Weizmann Institute does not stop at national borders. ECWIS brings together commitment across Europe and provides us, the German Friends, with valuable inspiration for our work — through exchange, fundraising and a shared enthusiasm for science.“
