About us

Since 1981, the German Friends of the Weizmann Institute has supported one of the world’s leading institutions for fundamental research in the natural sciences: the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.

We are an independent, non-profit association, brought together by people who believe in the power of science — and in research’s ability to improve the future for people everywhere and for our planet. Our community brings together a wide range of perspectives: scientists working at German institutions, many of whom have close ties to the Weizmann Institute; young people who have taken part in the ISSI programme and are now following their own scientific paths; and committed philanthropists without a scientific background, who advocate for the freedom of research and strong relations between Germany and Israel.

Our work is as much about community as it is about outreach. We encourage exchange among our members, create opportunities to meet and welcome new members who share our vision and wish to support our mission. Whenever possible, we facilitate personal connections and visits — especially for interested scientists — and help secure funding for selected research projects and activities at the Weizmann Institute.

Our mission
The German Friends strengthen links between people and institutions in Germany and the Weizmann Institute. Our role can be summed up in two words: friendraising and fundraising. We:

• Engage friends and supporters from science, business, politics and civil society
• Mobilise donations and funding for outstanding research projects
• Connect scientists and institutional partners
• Enable educational programmes for young talent

Together, we create the conditions in which outstanding research can grow, make an impact and shape the future.

Science connects
Working closely with German research institutions — including the Max Planck Society, the Helmholtz Association, the Leibniz Association and numerous universities — we promote bilateral collaborations, joint projects and exchanges between scientists.

Our work creates partnerships that endure for decades: between outstanding researchers and committed philanthropists, and across countries, disciplines and ideas.

Supporting young talent
The next generation is particularly close to our hearts. Each year, we enable exceptionally talented school students from Germany to take part in the International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) on the Weizmann Institute campus.

There, young people experience world-class science in an international environment — and often form friendships and networks that last a lifetime.
